IOPD DESIGN STANDARDs
Privacy by design is an international concept that has been promoted by regulators worldwide and has been adopted into laws and regulations. Until now, it has been ‘squishy’, hard to define, and difficult to implement.
The IOPD has changed this paradigm by developing the industry’s first standards for a repeatable and comprehensive process by which a company can reduce privacy risks.
Design Process Standard
V 1.0
We started the IOPD in January 2021 (after sitting around and ruminating on it since 2019) and while it took a few months to get the ball rolling once the Institute officially formed, the Standards Committee spent a little over a year through 2021 and 2022 drafting, discussing, editing, reediting, soliciting and responding to public comments, and we eventually created the 1st iteration of what we hope will become a gold standard in Privacy by Design!
We are on the hunt for organizations that would like to adhere to the standard and apply as an Early Adopter.
Design Assurance Standard
Public Draft!
The Design Process Standard (Process Standard) was adopted in January 2023 with this Design Assurance Standard (Assurance Standard) following two years later. While the Process Standard details the components necessary in a design process to incorporate privacy considerations and reduce privacy risks, this Assurance Standard uses an assurance case to confirm an organization’s claim that a specific product, service, or business process has been designed, developed, or deployed with privacy aforethought.
This is only a draft. Based on all feedback, the Standards Committee will finalize the draft and release the final Design Assurance Standard V. 1.0 in 2025.
